Design

Last summer, I completely redesigned the print templates myself to update fonts and prepare for color print (Fall of 2021 was our first time printing an entire issues in full color). Due to the pandemic and losing seniors with InDesign experience, I had to make the templates as beginner friendly as possible to allow the new staff members a chance to learn how to design pages. I also pushed for more magazine-styled front pages to make the most of our full color printing throughout this year. We have had the same serif fonts for at least the past four years, but I wanted to use a sans serif font for headlines and edges instead to modernize the style, especially since headlines are the first things the reader will see when looking at the page.

This year, I decided to learn how to wield Photoshop and Illustrator as well to apply to graphics I wanted to include on pages this year. Here are some of my favorite page designs!

I played with overlapping and cutting out images to add dimension to the headline, an idea suggested from a yearbook design session I tuned into at convention!

I scanned my own driver's license and edited out the information on it in Photoshop.  I added the statistics I wanted, as well as throwing in a photo of a Knight.

I use InDesign to make objects look more cohesive. This year I redesigned each template to fit the theme for the story. Here I did this by putting pullquotes on sticky notes and using Illustrator to add a chalk outline over the cutout.

The "Lowering the drawbridge" spread that I designed was my first attempt at a themed design. The concept was based around Prospect's nickname "White Castle" due to its lack of racial diversity and Knight mascot. The stories in this package are about the impact of race on the school and community.

Instagram

Visual appeal is a key part to a successful Instagram account. In order to create a visually intriguing and clean feed, we post graphics (using Canva) and candid photos frequently to show an up-to-date feed. We will post about holidays, refer to online stories, include quick Q&As -- things that have a high likelihood of getting reposted by other accounts to increase our reach.
