Broadcast Journalism

Chicago's first period rally encourages discussion

Two Prospect High School students organized a rally that took place in Chicago to raise awareness of the need to increase access to period products for disadvantaged or non-cisgender individuals. I took the train down to cover the protest, where I stood among skyscrapers and alongside professional news reporters. This was an exciting story because it involved on-the-spot reporting where I went up to strangers to get their viewpoints.

Rathe works to get new job of varsity girls' golf coach down to a tee

This girls' golf team feature allowed me to play with different wide or tight shots. There was a lot of trial and error in this story, but I was able to discover new ideas ways to incorporate sound and visuals in appropriate places while reporting on the team's new coach.

Girls' gymnastics raises the bar

This broadcast pushed me to follow the team through their practices to one of their meets which allowed me to get more personal quotes and stronger angles from the team. That kind of reporter-source connection is what I strive for in my team features, and doing it in a broadcast format helped me jump in the deep end towards that goal.

Live Broadcasting

Since my freshman year, I have participated in live football broadcasts as a camera person or associate producer. Over the years, the number of cameras has increased, but the frantic energy of the stadium underneath the Friday night lights has stayed the same (with the exception of 2020). As a camera person, whether in the press box or on the sidelines, I maintain a steady shot on the ball, listening to the direction of the executive producer on when to tighten or widen the shot. As an associate producer, I keep an eye on the score and time, updating the statistics. This job also includes troubleshooting when cameras go off air and setting up the wiring across the stadium.
